Given that a barrel of oil releases around 400 kg CO2 when combusted, and for the full lifecycle emissions intensity of oil to be neutral or even “carbon- negative” project costs and expand the amount-of CO2 stored per unit of investment. Big reductions in carbon dioxide emissions are possible with the continued use barrels of oil, participants heard, and today gas cap liquids constituted 50 per

A comprehensive Stanford-led analysis in Science finds that Saudi Arabia's crude oil production has the lowest carbon emissions per barrel among major petro-players.. Why it matters: Upstream production (before it's refined and used in cars, etc.) accounts for 5% of all greenhouse gas emissions from global fuel combustion, the study finds, which could have ramifications for carbon pricing and

Greenhouse Gas Emissions. The oil sands account for 9.8 per cent of Canada's GHG emissions and about 0.16 per cent of global GHG emissions. As a producer of upgraded, high quality, light, low-sulphur crude oil, we use more energy in our process than if we only produced a bitumen or heavy oil product. over the next two decades, from 83 million barrels per day (mmbbl/d) in 2009 to 105 mmbbl/d in 2030 (IEa, 2009). Extracting, transporting, and refining crude oil on average account for about 18% of well-to-wheels greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (u.S. Environmental Protection agency, 2009; European Commission, 2009).

Comparisons between reports is challenging because of the different basis used. (e.g. CO2 per barrel SCO/bitumen/conventional, CO2 per MJ finished fuel

We weighted each emission factor by the fraction of the total refinery production to derive the product-weighted average refinery emissions per barrel of crude oil. Emissions are expressed in CO 2 e/bbl using the 100-year global warming potential (GWP) coefficients of 34 for CH 4 and 298 for nitrous oxide (N 2 O) . According to data from the Government of Canada's 2019 National Inventory Report, Canada's oil sands per barrel greenhouse gas emissions have fallen 32 per cent since 1990.The inventory is Canada's official report submitted to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on greenhouse gas emissions. The GHGRP covers emissions from different aspects of the oil and gas industry through several of its subparts. Click on a number in the diagram below to find out how the GHGRP addresses emissions from different phases of oil and gas extraction, production, transport, and use.

primary sources of fossil fuel associated carbon emissions, oil is the largest duction emissions from oil extraction by 15 kg CO2e per barrel. (El-Houjeiri et al.

4 Apr 2017 That compares to an average U.S. refinery mix of 521 kilograms per barrel of carbon dioxide emissions. The difference is 111 kilograms per barrel
