In Stata, if you want to compute a risk ratio and P value, Stata’s -csi- command can be used. However, to use -csi- it is first necessary to calculate, within each group, the difference between the total number of subjects and the number of events. My data looks like this in a simplified way: ID year a b c d e f 10 2010 2 4 9 8 4 2 10 This however fails to converge, with Stata giving us repeated (not concave) warnings. This problem, of log link GLMs failing to converge, is well known, and is an apparent road block to estimating a valid risk ratio for the effect of treatment, adjusted for the confounder x. Estimating the risk ratio via a logistic working model

The Stata option exp(pop) includes log(pop) as an offset term in the linear predictor, so the R equivalent should be offset=log(pop) .

Often in Poisson regressions, one is interested in comparing the incidence rates. This is easily done by calculating incidence-rate ratios (IRR). The IRR for a  ratio— Estimate ratios 5 The ratio estimator Let R= Y=Xbe the ratio to be estimated, where Y and Xare totals; see[R] total. This calculation can be reproduced by specifying by(age) to indicate that the table is stratified, and istandard to specify that we want the internally standardized rate:

Thanks for your replies, Marcos and Andrea. I missed something else in my original post (Apologies!). I would like the the standardized rate ratios and CIs, not the crude rate ratios. To my novice understanding, the iri command needs the cases and person time, but this gives the RR and ci for the crude rates, not the standardized rates. The purpose of calculating the attrition rate is to determine whether it is high enough for it to be a significant cause for concern (as far as I have researched, an attrition rate of >20% is an issue). Following this, my plan of action if the attrition rate is high enough to be problematic is to delete the attrited individuals from my dataset. However, to use -csi- it is first necessary to calculate, within each group, the difference between the total number of subjects and the number of events.
